Here’s the easy how-to:

  • “Learning Time” with a Twist: Set aside 20 minutes each day for focused learning. Use a timer, and when it dings, celebrate a specific thing she did well. Try to do it at the same time each day and bump up the time by a bit weekly.
  • Word Soup Game: Create flashcards with sight words. Let your child mix them in a bowl and then read them back to you. Get creative and form wacky sentences with the words she picks!
  • Hopscotch Words: Help your child to arrange the cards alphabetically and have your child hop on them, saying and sounding out each word.
  • Speed Reading Fun: Time him or her reading a passage for 1 minute. Treat your child for beating his or her time and mastering the passage before moving to the next. Check out passages here
  • Pick a Book: Choose an engaging book at her reading level and read together daily. Find books here
  • Bedtime Story Sessions: Read each night.ย  Here are some of my favorites: Book 1, Book 2, Book 3. Ask her thought-provoking questions to dive deeper into the story (see below).
  • Weekend Thinking Map: Once a week, create a different Thinking Map that your child makes. Thinking Maps: These are great for visual learning and connecting ideas, like how characters feel or the main events of a story. Start with simple Circle Maps and get more complex as she gets the hang of it. Have her create the map herself. Learn about Thinking Maps
  • Online Reading Tests: Have your child read passages and answer comprehension questions on the computer. Start the test here

Here are the sight words for Grade 1 and Grade 2 to practice:

Grade 1 Sight Words: after, again, an, any, as, ask, by, could, every, fly, from, give, going, had, has, her, him, his, how, just, know, let, live, may, of, old, once, open, over, put, round, some, stop, take, thank, them, then, think, walk, were, when, what, white, who, will, with, yes

Grade 2 Sight Words: always, around, because, been, before, best, both, buy, call, cold, does, donโ€™t, fast, first, five, found, gave, goes, green, its, made, many, off, or, pull, read, right, sing, sit, sleep, tell, their, these, those, upon, us, use, very, wash, which, why, wish, work, would, write, your

And, to encourage critical thinking, here are some Higher Order Thinking Questions to ask:

  • What reasons can you think of that might have led the character to…?
  • How would you create a different ending to this story?
  • What evidence can you find that…?
  • How are the story’s events related to each other?
  • Can you predict what might happen next and why?

Remember, the goal is to make learning engaging and part of the daily routine. If you need any tips or want to share progress, I’m just an email away!

Sincerely,

Brooke
